The Alexander Technique is an educational process which teaches improved use of the body. It helps the student identify and change poor physical habits that may be causing stress, fatigue and pain.
Fredrick M. Alexander was born in Australia (1869-1955). As a baby he was not expected to live and was semi-invalid as a boy; but he was able to restore his health and taught his technique to others. Some of his students included George Bernard Shaw, John Dewey and Alduous Huxley.
What a lesson consists of: As the teacher guides with gentle touch and verbal feedback, a student learns to replace faulty patterns of use with improved coordination by locating and releasing undue muscular tension.
About your teacher: Richard Hamre has been teaching the Alexander Technique for over 15 years. He graduated from the Basel School for the Alexander Technique in Switzerland where he later assisted the principal teacher, Yehuda Kuperman, for nearly 3 years.
